Anonymity

I honestly do not care if a blogger remains anonymous.

In my opinion, the only instance when I would care if I blatantly know that the blogger is talking about me. However, as it was mentioned in class if you are in public there are certain behaviors that obviously one should refrain from doing. Also, I feel like I wouldn’t care that much even if the blogger was talking about me because it’s mind over matter. I shouldn’t care about something that I don’t find it true.

I know that I, personally, had an anonymous Tumblr that nobody could see. The purpose of that was because I wanted to let things out without hurting someone’s feelings. It served as an outlet for me. It wasn’t to bash on anybody, but it was solely for my eyes. I mean if somebody really did want to go anonymous I believe they could use that method. Otherwise, I feel like even though people go anonymous but they make it available to the world is because they want to garner support.

For example, someone with depression may go anonymous and post everyday of something that makes them depressed. Those who can relate would comment, like, retweet, and etc. The fact that somebody is interested in them or feels the same way could prevent someone with depression from committing an act.

Therefore, anonymous blogging would not really affect my reading unless it is geared specifically and only to me. I think anonymous blogging is great for people who are shy. It also shows that the blogger is responsible in case repercussions do exist when putting his or her name out.

Group: Seyvona, Jeremy, Erin, Hector, Justin

The admissions blog isn’t really well known or advertised. Our group didn’t know about the blog until this class, and many of us feel it would have been nice to see it before or during the admission process. Maybe having a link to the blog at the top of the application and as part the the acceptance packet.

The mobile layout is frankly terrible. Looking at the page on an tablet or smart phone deters the reader from continuing. Most younger people use mobile devices, and the lack of a visually appealing mobile page is a huge problem.

IMG_0008-0.PNG

Tag cloud is pretty large and ambiguous. It’s not helpful to the reader at all, and it’s size is visually unappealing. For an admission blog, some of the tags are inappropriate, such as “fr3sh”, and several repetitive tags such as “precalc” and “precalculus”.
Since the blog is written by various students, it’s hard for the writers to maintain a coherent tag cloud, so it would be better if the admissions blog administrators were to occasionally filter through the tags.

The last thing we noticed is that on the home page, the reader cannot see any part of the post. While a whole post would be too much, it would be nice to see the first 3-5 lines of the post to let the reader start reading it and therefore be more inclined to click “more”. A title is not enough to get a reader interested in clicking into the whole article.

Inpiration and Motivation

After reading the article on how to stay motivated for long term blogging a few of the suggestions that stood out to me were: responding to comments, encouraging my friends and family to share my posts, creating a blog ritual, using an editorial calender, troll Pinterest for new ideas, and use questions that appear in the comments as content for a new post.

Through all the research I have done for my research paper for this class a common thread I have seen is that responding to comments correlates directly with success of the blog, and success of blog encourages motivation. My plan is to take time each week to respond to comments that have come in, with more than a simple “thanks” but with actual content that will encourage a relationship with the reader.

My friends and family have a wide reach on social media and if I were to ask them to help me share and get my blog out there I’m sure they would be only too happy to help me out. Those of my friends and family who have read it have really enjoyed it but I don’t think they understand how help a share would be. By explaining to them how important a share is I think I will be able to get more traffic ad encouragement from my friends and family.

As a writer I know how important creating a writing or blogging ritual is. As of yet I haven’t been able to pin down a specific ritual, but over these next few weeks i am going to work on pinning down my ritual and so that when I do sit down to blog my mind is already in it and I don’t need to waste my time getting into it.

The editorial calender I set up a few weeks ago has been so incredibly helpful. Therefore going forward I am going to keep up the editorial calender so that there is no guess work as to what and when I should be writing.

My blog is heavily influenced by Pinterest and so keeping up with new crafts, snacks, and activities on Pinterest will be important for me to do. It is a way for me to find new ideas, rediscover old ones I forgot about, and become inspired to make up my own. Pinterest is a resource that never seems to run dry of inspiration and motvation for me.

Finally I think once i have cultivated a larger following and people are asking me questions responding to those questions in a post will be a helpful way for me to stay motivated and encourage readership. Creating post like this will encourage me to stay connected with my readers and build the relationship between the readers and myself.

Ways to lure the audience

I noticed that I do not respond to the comments that people post on my post. And I am deeply sorry, Usually when I am moderating the comments, I am either busy or on my phone looking at the notifications. And in my personal opinion, using my phone on wordpress is really annoying. From now on, I will respond to all the comments that the audience comments on because it will not motivate me to continue blogging, but it will motivate and give a reason why my audience should continue to look at my blog.

I will also use #8 and skip the words. I noticed that I write a lot and honestly it does get really annoying and boring. I feel like I don’t put enough pictures or my pictures aren’t spaced well enough that it may actually bore the reader.

I will maintain an on-going list of potential topics so that I am not hopelessly lost when I have to present two posts every week. It is really good to think ahead so that you can get the ingredients or supplies beforehand and not panic on the week of. That is actually what happened to me this week. I had something planned but because I didn’t have the supplies I couldn’t do it and had to think of another idea. Yikes…not fun!

Since WordPress isn’t like Tumblr where you can’t have an Ask me widget, I will ask what my readers/friends would like to see more just as I did last week. It is good to find a balance where one post may be something that I want to do and the other post may be something that the audience would like to see. Therefore, it is not an one-sided boring relationship.

Hahah, really loved number 25! This is something I actually do a lot for my personal blog. I troll on Pinterest and other visual social media to get ideas. Sometimes, it does really help because I tweek the projects I see and make it differently. However, sometimes I actually can’t seem to find something worthy for me to do. Shocking! However, I still use it and will still continue to use it! Definitely share where you got it from so that it doesn’t look like your stealing their idea! Also, you never know they may advertise your blog for being courteous and considerate. 🙂

Don’t forget to checkout my blog! You will be entertained.

What will you do?

This article basically sums up some of the points that i want to argue on. In this article the author tells how our excessive use of words like ‘LOL’ and ‘bc’ is getting in way professional writing because we’re making that our habit. And it’s really hard to switch b/w two types of writing. Twitter is ruining people in two fronts. you have unorthodox habit of writing and you forget about grammar. This is really bad  cause lets say if you are writing to company for job and you make that mistake!

We looked at the Kotaku blog and a post regarding the Chinese public purchasing a lot of imported iphones from the underground market and China’s reaction.

#1 The writing for this blog is very specific. The post we looked at talked about China “cracking down” on imported iphones which is what the post sticks to the entire way. It never really strays off topic and talks about a very specific issue.

#2 It is a mixture of short and lengthy sentences. The author tends to use shorter sentences when bringing up a point/ argument they are trying to make. Longer sentences are used when they want to present factual information to the reader.

#3 There aren’t many question marks and exclamation points and the article itself is mostly filled with facts.

#4 The author ends pretty conclusively. Since it’s an informative article there isn’t really a major argument presented so there aren’t any questions presented to the reader at the end of the post other than what their opinions are on this subject but that comes innately with any blog post so.

#5 Overall the post is pretty carefully crafted. The author doesn’t use too much casual language it’s really filled with a lot of facts regarding the issue. It’s formatted fairly well overall with paragraph breaks and visuals so there was definitely a significant amount of time placed into making this post.

#6 The paragraphs are not dense and cluttered. They are short and break when the author switches to the next set of information. They make good use of spacing and there aren’t any areas that are visually poor.

#7 Definitely has a focus. The author doesn’t seem to be ranting or anything of that calibur so it’s definitely well crafted. The author really sticks to this issue throughout the entire post.

#8 There is simple terminology overall. There aren’t too many high level vocabulary words or anything. The post talks about business and economics in China which would be the only sense of terms that you may or may not be familiar with (but overall fairly basic and not too formal with vocabulary)

#9 There is a title but other than that it’s just simple text. There aren’t really any headers.

#10 The author really isn’t targeting a specific audience or anything. He is just throwing out some news from China so it doesn’t really address any people per say other than just the American public I guess.

Crowdsourcing and the Effect it Can Have on Blogging

In Jeff Howe’s article, The Rise of Crowdsourcing, I found two points that I feel speak very clearly to how we see and use the internet and blogging today. But before I talk about those two points I want to flesh out what crowdsourcing is. According the Howe crowdsourcing is using the internet to access the ideas and content of other people. This picture I felt did a good job of defining crowdsourcing as well.editorial_12431_780x0_proportion

The first point that I felt stood out in Howe’s article was about the viral video. As a culture we currently seemed to be obsessed with viral videos. As Howe says in the article there are many T.V. shows dedicated to viral videos, “Bravo launched a series called Outrageous and Contagious: Viral Videos, and USA Network has a similar effort in the works. The E! series The Soup has a segment called “Cybersmack,” and NBC has a pilot in development hosted by Carson Daly called Carson Daly’s Cyberhood, which will attempt to bring beer-drinking farm animals to the much larger audiences of network TV. Al Gore’s Current TV is placing the most faith in the model.” Everyone seems to be interested in the latest funny/cute/stupid video that has been posted to the web. And not only are there T.V. shows dedicated to this stuff but sites like youtube and buzzfeed are filled with senseless/funny videos and receive a lot of traffic for said videos. For bloggers I believe this obsession can be useful in that if a blogger can find a way to incorporate a video that either is or they think will go viral they can increase traffic to their site. Bloggers can also crowdsource in that they can find out what their readers and readers of other blogs what to read about and provide it for them. Asking the simple question to your readers “What do you want to hear from me?” and then reading the responses is crowdsourcing because you are taking information from your readers that you didn’t previously have.

The second point that I found important about crowdsourcing is that people like agents, of all types, and other influential business people are now crowdsourcing. “Not everyone in the crowd wants to make silly videos. Some have the kind of scientific talent and expertise that corporate America is now finding a way to tap.” I know at this point in the article Howe was referring to scientific crowdsourcing but when I read this I immediately thought of musical artists like Karmin who started as a youtube channel and now have a record deal. If you don’t know who Karmin are look at the video below. Bloggers have been doing the same thing. Earlier today I read an article by Jeff Goins on how to get a book deal through blogging. So now, that crowdsourcing is a valuable tool, the important thing for bloggers to do is to create content that is worth someone’s time to find. Crowdsourcing can be an extremely profitable enterprise and being able to tap into that as bloggers I believe is going to be a huge help.

3 Different types of blogs on Adventure

I chose to look at adventure blogs. How people write about their journeys. I see that the have lots of pictures and videos than words. They just describe and tell about the place in couple of words and that’s it. They just let their pictures speak about their trips. But then again, pictures are worth 1000 words so it makes sense to put pictures up. As reader you are interested in knowing what that place looks like because you have never been there. I mean you don’t want to see something like, “it had tress and valleys” that doesn’t tell readers anything. so putting pictures up is the best way for adventure blogs.

1st blog : http://www.adventure-journal.com/2014/10/weekend-cabin-kielder-observatory-northumberland-u-k/c

2nd blog : http://migrationology.com

3rd blog : http://www.theadrenalist.com/adventure/gopro-let-me-take-you-to-the-mountain/

Second blog is about food in different places. “Food is the reason you should travel”. This way he is bringing diversity to travel blogs in which they just describe about places and put pictures up. He can write about two things food and travel experience. Which i think is pretty cool.

the 3rd blog give you POV video of different mountains he has been. That’s pretty cool because it make you feel that you are at the place. Which is the best way to get people’s attention is to make them feel that they’re part of something.

I researched 3 different posts regarding how to make homemade pizza dough.

http://food52.com/blog/10312-how-to-make-homemade-pizza-dough

http://www.lifeingraceblog.com/2013/04/homemade-pizza-how-to-make-perfect-crust/

http://www.eatliverun.com/the-best-pizza-dough/

In terms of noticeable differences, I noticed that both food52 and lifeline grace follows a step by step approach with a 1 picture included with each step giving them a more tutorial like feeling. The eatliverun pizza dough tutorial just showed a starting picture and an ending photo of what it will look like with text in between and it looks a little more bland in my opinion.

Another difference I noticed was how colorful and vibrant the lifeingrace blog and the pizza dough post was. Lifeingrace made good use of bold and colorful font to make it pop to the eyes of the audience whereas the other 2 blogs just used standard 12 size black font.

In terms of popularity all posts received a handful of comments but it appears eatliverun and lifeingraceblog received a lot more feedback than Food52’s post. Most of the feedback was all positive and rated how great the pizza dough was as well as included some suggestions and ideas of their own.

Another major difference I noticed was the language that lifeingrace used in their pizza dough tutorial post. Food52 and Eatlive run had a real tutorial robotic like feel (e.g stir the flour, pour this much water in etc.. etc..) Lifeingrace brings a lot of personal with a lot of casual language as if they were in conversation with the reader (using words like We, You, I, Me, names of people etc…) By talking with more of a casual language it really reaches out to the audience and makes the blog post seem more exuberant and fun.

The anonymity of the internet has allowed people to share their opinions without being judged but it has also given people the power to say things that are socially unacceptable without receiving any repercussions.
